Film Review: Akilla’s Escape

Black Is The Standard had the honor of reviewing films for the 2021 Atlanta Film Festival, and I have to say I was thoroughly impressed with the films I got to watch.

Of all the films though, Akilla’s Escape is the one that blew me away. It’s a story about a former gang member turned hustler, Akilla Brown who captures a young Jamaican gang member after a robbery. Over one stressful night, Akilla sees himself in the young boy, and attempts to protect him in a way that he wished someone had done for him when he was the same age..

Written and directed by Charles Officer, and co-written by Wendy Motion Brathwaite, the film stars Saul Williams (Girlfriends) as Akilla, and Thamela Mpumlwana as Sheppard. Thamela also plays young Akilla.

Ona scale of 1-10, 10 being a classic, I give Akilla’s Escape a strong 8. I recommend that everyone reading this watches this film
