A Planned Black community in Georgia may get a reality TV show

Freedom, Georgia will be a safe-haven for Black people

A group of 19 Black families recently made the headlines after combining their money and buying land in a Georgia town in which they plan to create a safe-haven for Black people. The community will be named Freedom, Georgia.

The land purchase obtained national attention last week, as well as interest from several TV networks, all who have expressed interest in developing a reality TV centered on the community. Some of the networks that have expressed interest are Lifetime, A&E, Oxygen, and HGTV.

The Freedom Georgia Initiative, led by Ashley Scott and Renee Walters, purchased 97 acres of land in Toomsboro, Georgia, a rural town with a population estimated at about 500 people.

When asked about the initiative, Scott said, “It was clear to me that developing new cities was necessary because these old ones, even with strong black leadership, have too many deep-rooted problems.”

Scott, who is also a real estate agent, stated that the community would be a “safe-haven for people of color, for Black people in particular.”

Scott believes that empowering Black people begins with creating opportunities for generational wealth. “Black power comes from wealth,” Scott explained. “Wealth is created through cash-flow and assets. Who has more cash flow and assets than governments? Where does the cash-flow come from? Taxes and bonds. Who pays taxes? Landowners. Who runs governments? People. We are the people. We have to be more involved, especially young people!”
